Steps to Ship Vehicle Spare Parts

Many vehicle spare parts are classified as hazardous goods. But don't worry, that doesn't mean you can't ship them. Find a complete summary of how to safely ship vehicle spare parts here!

In fact, vehicle spare parts often have unique shapes and weights. That's also what makes many people confused and hesitant to ship them.

Not to mention the risk of spare part damage during shipping that's almost impossible to repair.

But because most car components are sold online, shipping spare parts to distant locations is unavoidable.

Safe packaging can protect you from losses and improve the security and handling of your shipment. Follow these packaging tips and recommendations:

Motor Vehicle Spare Parts Transportation Services

The mode of transportation that can be used for spare parts shipping depends on the size and delivery time constraints.

Based on the criteria above, two of the most common methods for vehicle spare parts shipping are:

  • Full truckload (FTL) uses an entire truck exclusively to ship your spare parts. This type of shipping has no transit, so cargo is delivered directly to the destination point.
  • Less than truckload (LTL) shares truck space with other shippers at a lower cost. LTL shipping takes more time because there are multiple stops for other shippers' deliveries.

Choosing the Right Container

Choosing the right container is crucial to ensure safe spare parts shipping.

The main thing to remember is that you must choose a container of the correct size, because there's no point in choosing a large container if small parts can shift and potentially break.

Additionally, each spare part needs to be packaged securely. Each spare part will have different needs depending on its size, weight, and technical characteristics.

For smaller spare parts, packing will be easier because the items tend to be lightweight and easy to handle.

The volume of goods being shipped also affects the choice of packaging. If you plan to ship large quantities in the same container, it's better to pack spare parts separately rather than placing everything in one crate

Packing Spare Parts Safely

Some of the most popular vehicle spare parts packaging options:

  • VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors): special packaging produced to prevent vehicle parts from corrosion and rust.
  • Foam: a material that expands inside the packaging and conforms to your product's shape to prevent damage during transit and keep its original appearance intact.
  • Anti-static packaging: used to transport electronic components and block the possibility of static charges during transit.

To reduce the chance of spare parts breaking, shippers should also pay attention to strong external protection.

Once items are securely placed inside the truck, they won't be as susceptible to external factors, but it's highly recommended to create pallet boxes if possible.

Stacking goods on pallets will reduce the risk of movement inside the truck.

Vehicle Spare Parts Shipping Steps

When packing components, use adequate packaging such as padding to fill empty spaces and prevent movement inside the box.

When preparing irregularly shaped components for shipping, secure the padding firmly to help prevent it from coming loose during handling.

1. Pad and Secure in Corrugated Box

Wheels

Pad all surfaces and place in a chrome box to avoid the risk of damage from scratches or dents. For non-decorative wheels, wrap with a clear plastic layer sealed appropriately.

Flexplates, Flywheels

Pack flexplates and flywheels with adequate packing material such as loose fill peanuts to fill empty spaces in corrugated boxes.

Car Doors, Hoods, Panels

Pad and place in boxes all open metal surfaces that are susceptible to damage from scratches or dents.

Flexible Plastic Moldings

Pad and place in boxes all flexible plastic moldings to prevent damage or tearing.

Shocks, Coil Springs

Place cylindrical parts in boxes that can be packed in tubes with adequate dunnage such as padding at each corner and loose fill peanuts to prevent puncturing through the lid.

Bumper

Place bumpers susceptible to scratches or dents in boxes. Or wrap the bumper with a heavy-duty plastic bag and padding sealed appropriately to protect sharp or pointed edges.

Transmission

Drain all transmission fluid and place in plastic bags with absorbent padding underneath to absorb residual fluid.

Moldings

Wrap non-decorative moldings in plastic bags sealed securely, or pad and place in boxes.

Sway Bar, A-Arms

Wrap sway bars, A-arms and threaded rods in fiberboard or appropriate plastic bags and tape securely.

Exhaust System Parts, Leaf Springs

Pad and cover sharp and pointed edges with corrugated boards, air cell padding materials such as Bubble Wrap® and tape securely.

Tires

Place tire label on the tire tread.

2. Seal and Label

Using the H tape method, apply at least three pressure-resistant tape strips with a minimum width of 5 cm to the top and bottom of the carton to protect the package and its contents. Seal all seams or flaps.

Vehicle Spare Parts Labeling

Proper labeling plays an important role in the spare parts shipping process.

Labels serve as a passport that provides a brief description of the unit such as type, model, specific usage instructions, etc.

Vehicle spare parts labels serve to identify goods and carry brief operational data.

Labeling is also very important in shipping spare parts containing chemical liquids. These units must be transported more carefully to reduce the risk of chemical interaction with external materials.

The simplest way to label correctly is to mark it with a sticker containing all necessary information.

Important: the more detailed the data written on the crate sticker, the less likely the shipment will be considered for reclassification or re-weighing.
